On Saturday March 3 2018, the Junior Achievement TCI Grand Turk team, Forecast 5, was awarded the national Innovation Camp 2017 championship. Facing off in one last challenge against Providenciales team- 649 Aerial System, the winning team wowed the panel of judges with their creativity and preparedness. The event was a one-day private affair hosted at the Airport Inn banquet hall in Providenciales.

The final challenge required the students to develop a campaign using social media as a tool to prepare high school graduates for the work force. In their final presentations the two groups expressed their ideas with a PowerPoint presentation, and a written report, along with a 30 second video commercial of their product/solution. The two teams were assessed by a panel of judges- Scotiabank representatives Dawn Higgs, Keyana Seymour, and Outside the Box Advertising representative Chandra Craigg.

The winning team’s campaign created an entire non-profit organization with an adjoining app which preps high school graduates on the necessary skills needed for the work force It also offered in person and in app courses on work readiness. The judges were wowed with their creative 30 second video complete with skillfull editing and group acting.

The winning team will now move on to represent the Turks and Caicos in the regional challenge, facing off with teams from around the Caribbean. This year’s regional Innovation Camp will be an online challenge and with an added fan favourite component. Details on how you can vote for your favourite regional contender will be posted to the JATCI Facebook page and website- www.jatci.org.  

Junior Achievement TCI has also launched an in-class personal development program targeting older youths. The JA Economics for Success program focuses on teaching personal finance and defining career goals for students between the ages of 14-17. It’s an interactive series of hour long sessions taught at designated high schools across the islands. The courses are taught by an array of local business professionals who selflessly volunteered their time to give back to students and their community. During each session students will be taught the fundamentals on topics such as decision-making skills, critical thinking, budgeting, managing income and debt, and values. Island wide sessions will take place for all interested students March 17th and 24th in Providenciales and at a later date on other islands. If you are interested in volunteering for the organization training will be provided. Information on all events will be posted on the organizations website and Facebook page.

Junior Achievement 2017 Innovation Camp

Just after Hurricane Irma, the Junior Achievement 2017 Innovation Camp took place simultaneously in Grand Turk and Providenciales. In Grand Turk, 59 students gathered at the H.J. Robinson High School, breaking down into 12 teams of 14- to 18 year- olds. Seventy-seven students from numerous high schools around Providenciales gathered at The Shore Club breaking into 11 teams. For this year’s challenge, both groups were asked to find a way to prepare for and mitigate the effects of a hurricane through a full day of brainstorming and presentations.

Scotiabank made an investment of US $2,000,000 on JA Americas to implement “Road to Success”, one of the biggest regional projects of the history of JA in the Americas. The three-year initiative will reach out to 17 countries of the region and will be based in the program JA Economics for Success.

Junior Achievement TCI hosts another successful Innovation Camp. This year’s Camp took place in Providenciales and Grand Turk simultaneously. Seventy-seven students from numerous high schools around Providenciales gathered at The Shore Club for a full day of brainstorming and presentations. The students were broken down into 11 teams between the ages of 14-18 years old. In Grand Turk, 59 students gathered at the HJ Robinson High School, breaking down into 12 teams, they worked diligently to create an innovative proposal. For this year’s challenge, both groups were to find a solution or a way to prepare and mitigate the effects of a hurricane.
